Story Behind The Story: With My Whole Heart

In August of 2007, I had a hip replacement. I was only in my 40s, but my hip had never been 'right.' It had just gotten worse since we moved to Wisconsin.

At my father's funeral the previous February of 2007, I found out that my brother needed both hips replaced (he's five years older than I am). So I went to the doctor and scheduled to have mine replaced, not really knowing what it was like to be 'disabled,' even though this was fixable.

I had to get a handicapped sign for my car, used a cane, and was pretty miserable. After the operation, I used a walker and crutches. With the pain killers and limping, I could finally appreciate what it was like to be dependent on others and not being able to really get around.

That's when I decided to write this book. I'm not a top model, however if a woman that beautiful was permanently injured, what would the modeling community do to her? I did some research through my sister, who knows many people with disabilities, telling me stories of how they truly are second-class citizens. It's as if they're untouchable. With all the injured soldiers coming back from overseas, one would think people would be more accepting, but not true.

Here's hoping society finally can accept people with disabilities as real people, not fractured or broken.
