Story Behind The Story: Touchdowns & Potions ![]() I live in Packer country, in the Green Bay area of Wisconsin. If you've never heard of the Packers, they won the Superbowl this past winter. The fans are one of a kind, wearing triangular foam designed to look like cheeseheads. If you're a Packer fan, you either have a green 'G' on your car, flags on the sides of your car on game day, or the coveted shirt of your favorite player. I've even seen cheese bras over shirts on some women. Yeah. Not a pretty picture. I never followed football before we moved to Wisconsin. And, I've even lived in places where football is pretty big, such as Washington, D.C. (the Redskins), two hours west of Philadelphia (the Eagles), and even in the Kansas City area (the Chiefs). I never knew the player names or the numbers when I lived in those towns and couldn't have cared less, kind of like my character Jenna in this book. But since we moved to Wisconsin, I found fans that I'd never believe existed. If you live here, you HAVE to know all the player numbers, too. My neighbor tells me of 'Packer sightings,' where rumors of people seeing these infamous players in their normal daily routine. For example, Donald Driver (#80…nicest guy with the whitest smile I've ever seen) frequents the local Subway. I, personally, also saw him one Christmas Eve at Golden Corral with his extended family. Man…that guy's skinny! Brett Favre (#4) used to be a huge sighting in town, and I think I saw him once, in his truck…but I can't be certain, because of the tinted windows. Also, Ahman Green (#30—was Brett Favre's right-hand man, but quit playing) was student teaching in a local high school. The kids were told not to ask for autographs, but he was all the rage. The funniest sighting that happened to me was right before the big games back in January of this year. My son was home from college, and we went to Walmart to stock up on things for his trip back. I decided he needed a haircut and took him to the haircutting place right in the store. I paid the bill (note: college kids never have money, like that's news), then decided to walk around Walmart. I walked around, and when I was heading back to the haircutting place, I could've sworn I saw the biggest name player in the area. Aaron Rodgers. The current quarterback, and adorable (my married friend, Rose, who's about my age has a MAJOR crush on this guy). #12. No kidding. In Walmart. Now, granted, this was during the day, when he'd be practicing for the biggest game of his life. There was no WAY he'd be in Walmart. He probably has personal shoppers, and I'm sure, on his multi-million dollar contract, Walmart wouldn't be the first place he'd shop. But at the time, he WAS Aaron. I wanted to chase the guy to get his autograph. I ran to get my son to tell him, meeting him on the way out of the hair cutting place. We walked through the entire giant store to find the illusive 'Aaron.' But the guy was gone. Since that day, I've been to that Walmart many times. As it turns out, there's an employee there who could be a ringer for Aaron Rodgers from a distance. I think I'm going crazy. So the point of this 'Packer sighting' is the background of my book, 'Touchdowns & Potions.' The main character of the story, Andy McKnight has fans hunting him down whenever he goes out. He's used to the publicity, however, his real estate agent, Jenna Steele, a real stickler for her 'schedule,' hates it. To make the plot more interesting, I had to throw in something to throw the characters off their stride. Thus, a little old woman named Edna Bluebright enters the scene. She's odd, but savvy when it comes to football. She decides to put a love potion on Jenna's wrists, that lasts exactly a week. Poor Jenna. She can't cope, certain Andy only wants to spend time with her because of the potion. Even though she tries to stay to herself, random men throw themselves at her feet, all because of the potion. Andy has women throwing themselves at him as well, but he only wants one woman—the real estate agent for his huge home. Enjoy Touchdowns & Potions! It was fun to write and I hope just as much fun to read. Read the first chapter here. Buy links: |
