Story Behind The Story: Kissing the Waves

With this book, I was inspired by seeing a picture of a surfer, riding a tube of water out near Hawaii. I can't even imagine doing that, let alone get on top of a surfboard. But it fascinated me. Since then, I've seen dogs surfing, which is also very cool.

So, for this story, I decided to do something different. The heroine is a genius, locked into a life she doesn't want to deal with. She has two jobs that really don't let her be creative, just to take care of her mother. My father-in-law had Alzheimer's and it's just scary at times. So I had to give Kara's mother something that would make sense to me. Some minutes he'd be completely coherent, but other times, he couldn't find his way home when driving...and that was at the beginning of the disease. It's very sad to watch.

To ramp up the conflict, I wondered about the hero. I always wondered what the president's kids would have to endure, and this was the perfect time to think about it. I certainly woudln't want to live like that, always being in the public eye, and worrying for my safety.

When putting the two characters together, it seemed like a match that would never work. But with a little love and caring, these characters make it work.
